Not everyone agrees with you, but I think there's a good debate to be had about if and how to update laws to accommodate new business models.
Operating in a legal gray area isn't a good solution for drivers, riders, or Uber.

I guess we'll see what happens next in California? I'm guessing they'll significantly relax the controls they exert over drivers to get them back to contractor status. Which doesn't sound great for Uber.

What needs updating? This is not a new business model; they aren't doing anything special from a legal point of view.
