Actually Everest isn't technically difficult to climb. There are more challenging and dangerous ascents like K2 and Anapurna. More people die on Everest because a lot of adventure companies will take you up without much prior experience on big mountains. This should be stopped. Climbing it shouldn't.
There are other safer peaks with equally beautiful and stunning views. When you think about it, doing Everest specifically is really just name dropping ego humping. How did people 'live' before we had geo satellites to surface the earth and notify us of the top 10 death defying peaks?
Any way you square it, people who climb everest are not giving much back to humanity in doing so. Its an incredibly selfish act.
Says who? That's a lot of vitriol about something we've never done. Watch a video about it sometime, maybe it'll seem less like ego and more like an incredibly difficult physical and mental task that 99.99% of humanity could never accomplish.
Or, remain cynical and by the way don't watch the Olympics because, you know, selfish.
Doesn't have to be Everest though. Everest is chosen because of its rank as one of the tallest.
Physical feats do not last, beyond records. Hence an obsession with dangerous feats. Scientific legacy does though. "It makes me feel alive." Great and all but lets not frame it as anything but a selfish roll of the dice.
A lot less people die climbing Everest than commuting to work. The first group probably enjoys the activity a lot more.
Seriously though, why do you have to throw snark at dead people who have their own lifetime of reasons for doing something you happen not to like? They're not harming you or anybody else. They're certainly not forcing you to climb the mountain. Your comment just manages to be rude, insensitive, pretentious and judgemental all at once - are you going for a record of your own?
> A lot less people die climbing Everest than commuting to work.
If you're talking about absolute numbers, I don't even know why you want to mention this. Otherwise, it's just plainly not true.

> Urgh...
My comment is not about dead people but about those who're still alive. I generally don't like people dying. I hate it. So, I don't like when this "so cool to climb Everest" story ends in such horrible results so often, and still those romanticized climbers or people seeking fame and glory with help of media swirl another batches of careless people to play this russian roulette. Everest is just too dangerous. And it's also not true saying they don't harm anybody, they harm their families and friends. Seeing all those bodies and knowing that it's still not enough to make people think more clear just fills me up with emotions and that's why I comment. And if you tell me I'm not allowed to express my feelings toward anything I'm not taking part of and you're getting to get personal, then I'm afraid I don't have anything to discuss with you.
